‍What is a DNS Root Zone?

The “Root Zone” is the highest level of the Domain Name System structure. It contains the names and the numeric IP addresses for all top level #domain names such as .com, .net & .org

How does the Root Zone work?

Every time you try to connect to a website or online service by entering a web address on your browser, this action triggers a DNS lookup, and all DNS lookups start at the root zone.

Once the lookup hits the root zone, the lookup will then travel down the hierarchy of the #DNS system. First hitting the TLDs servers, then the servers for specific domains (and possibly subdomains).

Finally it hits the authoritative nameserver for the correct domain, which contains the numerical IP address of the website being sought. This IP address is then returned to the client. This is how the internet works

What are Alt Roots?

Only Top Level Domains registered by ICANN utilize the traditional DNS Root Zone. Web3 Domains such as ENSDomains, Unstoppableweb, Decentraweb & HNS utilize the blockchain to replace the functionality of the root zone in a decentralized environment.

In this case all Web3 Top Level Domain info is stored on either a POS blockchain such as Ethereum, Polygon, Binance; Or a POW blockchain, such as Handshake with queries handled by a compatible dDNS.
